The sites
124 colonies across six named sites and six outyards, all inside eleven miles of the honey house. Which honey you get is decided here and nowhere else.
Colonies go up on the moor in the second week of August and come down in late September. Nothing else is worked there, and in a wet August nothing comes off it at all.
The honeydew site. It gives nothing most years and then gives one very dark crop, which is why the hives are left there rather than moved to something reliable.
The spring bulk. Supers come off within ten days of the rape finishing — leave it and it sets in the comb and cannot be extracted.
Half of these are here on pollination contracts and go home to the grower in June. What they make in May is the spring blossom.
Sheltered, and the last forage in the county. The ivy is mostly left on for winter stores; what we take is the surplus.
Depends entirely on the silage date. Cut early and there is no clover crop; cut late and this is the best site we have.
